Why Is Handmade Expensive?

It’s a question that comes up a lot. Why does something handmade cost more?

The simplest answer is: it’s not made the simple way.

Handmade pieces aren’t mass produced. There’s no assembly line, no shortcuts, no hundreds of identical copies being made in minutes. Each piece is made individually, from start to finish.

Every single piece is crafted by hand. That means shaping, refining, finishing is done slowly, with attention and care. What might look effortless now is actually the result of years of practice. It takes time to reach a point where your hands just know what to do, and even then, every piece still asks for patience.

If there’s painting involved, every stroke is done by hand too. No prints, no transfers just time, focus, and a steady hand.

And then there’s the part people don’t always see: The thinking. Coming up with new ideas, experimenting, trying things that might fail, starting over, refining again. There’s a lot of energy that goes into turning an idea into something real you can hold.

I also don’t use moulds, which means nothing is replicated exactly. Every curve, every detail is shaped individually. That’s why no two pieces are ever completely the same and that’s also what makes them special.

Beyond the making, there’s time spent on preparing materials, testing, firing, finishing, and sometimes remaking pieces that didn’t turn out right. Handmade often includes mistakes, learning, and starting again all part of the process.

So when you buy something handmade, you’re not just paying for the final object. You’re paying for the time, the skill, the years behind it, and the care that went into making something that didn’t exist before.

It’s slower, more intentional, and yes more expensive. But it’s also more personal.
